Who and What is Nelson Youth Centres

Nelson Youth Centres is an accredited children’s mental health centre that provides group based treatment programs for Halton’s children and youth and their families. Our services target children who are experiencing moderate to severe emotional, social, behavioural or learning problems, which result in difficulties at home, school and the community.

We provide therapeutic services to strengthen the abilities of children, youth and parents experiencing difficulties. We focus on helping children and youth acquire skills and resources to realize their full potential.

Nelson Youth Centres contributes to the health and wellness of our community by strengthening families and enabling the emotional and social well being of children and youth.

Help Support the Youth!

Nelson Youth Centres receives two thirds of its funding from the Provincial Government, Municipal Government and the United Ways of Hamilton/Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. That means we need to raise more than $100,000 from the local community so we can continue to provide these vital services to the children and families in our community.

Our History

The beginning of Nelson Youth Centres

Initiated by the Outreach Committee of Port Nelson United Church, a youth program was developed in the 1970s to address problematic adolescent behaviours. Together with Ron Coupland of the Halton Children’s Aid Society, Judge James Fuller of Halton Family Court, Burlington Regional Councillor David Coon, and others in the community, a project was designated to teach youth responsible behaviour, and to provide individual and group counselling.

Nelson Youth Centres  opened in 1978 to meet the needs of youth in Halton. It is located in a renovated farmhouse owned by the City of Burlington. Since its inception, the Nelson Youth Centres has grown in response to the needs of its community.

Today, The Centre is an accredited children’s mental health centre that provides a rich array of therapeutic group programs for children and youth and parent support services to support the emotional and social well being of children and youth while strengthening families in the community.
