AFTER SCHOOL THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT PROGRAM

Focus:   This program focuses on building self esteem, improving social/emotional skills and developing effective learning strategies for children. Children referred to this program often experience moderate to severe emotional, social or behavioural and learning problems, which result in difficulties at home, school, and in the community.

.

Program Description:   The After School Therapeutic Treatment Program is a group based children's program. Group work is the base therapy modality, augmented by a therapeutic milieu, learning supports and strategies and individual and family work. The Centre provides treatment and supports to the parents while the children are in the program. Parents are provided with programs/services that teach and support them to be resources to their children. The Parenting Program is a mandatory six-week program that runs in conjunction with the After School Therapeutic Treatment Program.

The use of family meetings, parent support, and parent training sessions encourage parents, who often feel isolated, to form closer bonds with the community and other parents who are experiencing similar problems. The stronger the family, the more they can contribute to the lasting health of the community.

The program targets children between 7 and 14 years who exhibit low self esteem, problems expressing emotions, psychosocial difficulties, poor peer relationships, lack of social/life skills, behavioural difficulties in both home and school and learning difficulties. These children often suffer from difficult life transitions, bullying from peers and have difficulties in school, at home, and in social groups. Research has shown that children who receive social skills treatment with involvement of their parents and schools do significantly better than those children receiving treatment whose parents and schools are not involved. The children are referred by parents /guardians, medical professionals, schools and other service providers.

The stronger the family, the more they can contribute to the lasting health of the community.
