2016 Summer Program Recap

Nelson Youth Centres finished another great summer with annual Therapeutic Summer Camp. For the last 2 months, 2 different groups of kids participated in a creative arts therapy program, where they went on field trips while expressing themselves through photography and theater.

The July group consisted of kids ages 7 to 10, while the August group consisted of kids 10 to 14. All the kids in the camp were all referred from other Nelson Youth Centres programs. They come to the summer program to work on their personal issues by using self expression through the arts.

The kids and counsellors all had lots of fun on the field trips and during group activities. The 2 groups went to many different attractions around the golden horseshoe. Some of the highlights include picking berries at Andrew Scenic Acres, and going to the Art Gallery of Ontario. To help the kids with their art activities, many guests came to the centre, to teach topics like photography, music, and choreography. Then at the end of each group, the kids presented their work to their parents in an afternoon of art extravaganza.

The focus of the July group was on visual arts such as painting and photography. The kids of the group worked together to paint a group mural, and took many pictures as part of their visual arts therapy. The arts extravaganza at the end of their group was focused on showcasing their work, which was printed, framed and displayed in the center.

The August group focused on performing arts such as music and theater. They worked with guest artists to choreograph a dance, and write their own play centered on bullying. The kids then performed a show to all their family at their art extravaganza, in the NYC basement space that was converted into a theater.

Both groups were a huge success, where the kids all bonded on the field trips and through their group activities. One boy even said they have finally “found his people” this summer.

Nelson Youth Centres hopes to continues this success, and keep providing a great opportunity for kids to make new friends, and express themselves in a safe environment.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old
