Reconnecting Youth

Focus:  This is a community based program for 15 – 17 year olds living in the Acton and Oakville communities focussing on building self esteem, developing more effective social/emotional skills and developing healthy life style choices . The program works with the school in helping the youth develop effective learning strategies.

Program Description:  The Reconnecting Youth Program is designed to support youth who are having difficulty coping at home, at school and in the community.  This program is an after school treatment program which is delivered weekly in Oakville and Acton.

Group work is the base therapy modality, augmented by a therapeutic milieu, individual and family work. The Centre provides treatment and supports to the parents while the youth are in the program. Parents are provided with programs/services that teach and support them to be resources to their children, helping them transition into adulthood.

The program targets youth between 14 and 17 years who exhibit low self esteem, anger management, problems expressing emotions, poor peer relationships, poor life skills, behavioural difficulties in the community, home and school. This often leads to poor decision making and difficulties with authority figures/system. These youth often struggle with life transitions and have difficulties in social groups.

The program works with key issues that effect youth today including low self esteem, depression, peer pressure, anger management, academic stress and maintaining healthy relationships. Counsellors work individually with youth and their parents to help with the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Youth are referred by parents/guardians, medical professionals, schools, and other service providers.
